I wanted to read a book outside of the books that we were reading in class to give myself a “leg up” when it came time for me to teach class.

There is also content restrictions outside the subject matter of a girl with terminal cancer. Inappropriate language that will not allow any teacher to put this on his or her class shelf. We relish the play because we want to see how they stay together even with all the obvious hurdles. Was there any question that Romeo and Juliet weren’t going to be together? No. He just immediately makes it known that there is no question they won’t be together. This is not to say that Green denies us insight into their courtship. Books about relationships and teenagers with cancer generally need to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. There is no “will they or won’t they get together” question about their relationship. She meets her counterpart in a young man named Augustus through a support group for kids living with cancer. The reader may assume it was through her years of homeschooling, since the start of her illness, but the reader may also assume that she was just born this way or that living with a terminal disease has made her wise beyond her years. There is no reference in the book as to how she became so very sage at the young age of 16. Hazel is a smart, sassy girl with a broad vocabulary and intelligence. The reference to Cassius reminds of us of that “underling” feeling and Green contrasts this “teenage angst” in Hazel, whose teen aged angst is subdued when she is allowed to just be a teenager. Hazel’s non-cancerous school friend Kaitlin reminds us of the “normal teenager” and their dramatic life and death situations that they feel they face every day. John Green presents an interesting comment about the psyche of young adults. Although in Hazel’s case, due to her illness, these decisions often take on life threatening consequences. Like most teenagers she feels the pull of making decisions which make herself happy, while trying to balance this with pleasing her parents.

Hazel has all the normal pinings of a normal teenager including hormonal changes, crushes and the desire to be “normal”, however in her world “normal” has a very different meaning. Although the subject matter is sombre the book is able to uplift due to the wit and perseverance of the main protagonist. The Fault in our stars centres around Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16 year old teenager with terminal cancer. A reference you will concretely understand after you read the book. The title comes from a reference to Shakespere’s Julius Caesar in which Cassius says to Brutus “The fault, dear Brutus is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings”‘. The book I chose for this assignment is The Fault of our Stars by John Green.
